Shanti means peace and a Shanti mantra chant is a way to achieve peace. Shanti mantra has its origins in the Upanishads – the ancient Vedic scriptures. The Vedics had very intricate knowledge about how the mind works and they had well-established methods to achieve a meditative state.
Peace is the state where anxiety leaves us and we become fully present in the now. When you learn to ‘just be,’ you become devoid of any judgments, and distractions of the past and future. You learn to harness the ability to willingly attain calmness and ultimately peace.
A Shanti mantra is often recited after or before any Hindu religious ritual. The Shanti mantra symbolizes peace of your mind, your physical body, and your soul. It is also believed to bring individual, collective and universal peace.
Om Shanti Mantra
Om Shanti mantra is the bringer of cosmic peace. ‘Om Shanti Om’ or ‘Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti’ is one of the prevalent used mantras as it is recited as a greeting and also used for removing any distractions while meditating. Although you will find it being used in yoga classes as a form of greeting more often.
‘Om Shanti’ has a deep philosophical meaning. It reminds us of the Supreme and how we are connected to it. It reminds us that being at peace is our true form and true self. So, it has been rightly used as a greeting as we are always reminded of our true nature as peaceful souls.
When we chant the mantra thrice – it means we are acknowledging peace in our body, mind and our soul with the uttering of each ‘Shanti.’ It goes on to mean a few different things and can be applied to bring peace in any circumstance of your life.
