Important Tips for Deeper Practice

  • Before starting, set your intention. Think about why you are chanting this mantra and what does OM mean to you. Remember it’s your practice, and your understanding of Om and what it means to you can be totally different from everyone else’s
  • Start with gentle chanting – avoid chanting the mantra loud.
  • Give equal measure to each sound component (“ooommm” rather than “ommm”)
  • Feel the energy flow from lower body to crown as you chant
  • Notice how the “mmmmm” sound releases tension from the top of your head
  • Allow the mantra to naturally sync with your breath cycle

With consistent practice, you’ll experience a beautiful harmonization of mind, breath, sound, and vibration. This synchronization helps maintain a calm mind and relaxed body.

As you continue, you may notice feeling progressively lighter with each chant – this is a normal and positive sign of the practice working.

Different Chanting Techniques

There are several powerful techniques for chanting Om, each offering unique benefits and experiences:

1. Traditional Three-Part Om / Resonant Om

This basic technique breaks down the Om into three distinct sounds: “Aaa-Uuu-Mmm.” Each part is given equal duration and attention, creating a complete vibration cycle.

This technique focuses on feeling the vibrations in different parts of the body. ‘Aaaaa’ sounds resonates with lower chakras, base of our spine, our navel and abdomen, ‘uuuu’ sensation can be felt at chest and ‘mmmmm’ resonates with the nasal and the brain. This technique helps in channeling our inner energy and helps to stimulate parasympathetic nervous system for deep relaxation.

2. Silent Mental Chanting (Manasika)

In this technique, Om is chanted mentally without making any external sound. This method is particularly powerful for deep meditation and can be practiced anywhere.

“Manasika” means only “for the mind”. This practice is particularly powerful for developing laser-sharp concentration and mental clarity. During silent Om chanting, you direct your awareness to the brow chakra (third eye chakra) – the spiritual center associated with intuition and higher consciousness. As you mentally repeat the mantra, you may experience a gentle pressure or tingling sensation in this area, which is a sign of increased energy flow. This technique is especially beneficial for those seeking to enhance their meditation practice, improve focus for daily tasks, or develop their intuitive abilities.

3. Rhythmic Om Chanting

This involves chanting Om in a specific rhythm or count, often synchronized with breath. For example, chanting Om for 4 counts, holding for 4, and releasing for 4.

This rhythmic practice has been shown to effectively reduce stress levels and promote a sense of calm by regulating breath patterns and activating the parasympathetic nervous system. The consistent rhythm helps synchronize brainwave patterns, leading to deeper relaxation and mental clarity.

4. Continuous Flow (Akhand)

In this method, each Om flows seamlessly into the next, creating an unbroken chain of vibrations. This technique is excellent for extended meditation sessions.

Akhand, meaning “unbroken” or “continuous,” is a particularly powerful technique for achieving deep meditative states. In this practice, each Om flows seamlessly into the next without any pauses or breaks between chants. This continuous flow helps maintain an uninterrupted state of awareness and concentration, making it easier to reach higher levels of our conscious mind (higher mind) during meditation. Unlike other techniques where breaks between chants might allow the mind to wander or become distracted, the continuous nature of Akhand Om helps anchor the consciousness in the present moment, leading to a more immersive and profound meditation experience.

Remember, regardless of the technique you choose, the key is consistency and mindfulness in practice. Start with the method that feels most natural to you and gradually explore others as your practice deepens.

Tips for Beginners

Starting your Om meditation journey can feel overwhelming at first. Here are some essential tips to help beginners establish a strong foundation:

  • Start Small: Begin with just 5-10 minutes of practice. Quality is more important than quantity when you’re starting out.
  • Find Your Voice: Don’t worry about making it sound “perfect.” Start with a comfortable pitch and volume that feels natural to you. Use our chant along sessions to help you out in your meditation practice.
  • Practice at the Right Time: Early morning or evening when your surroundings are quiet are ideal times for practice.
  • Create Your Space: Set up a dedicated meditation corner where you won’t be disturbed. Keep it simple but comfortable.
  • Use Proper Posture: Sit with your spine straight but not rigid. You can use a chair or cushion for comfort.
  • Listen First: Before attempting to chant, spend time listening to proper Om chanting recordings to understand the sound and rhythm.
  • Focus on Breath: Pay attention to your breathing. The Om chant should flow naturally with your breath.
  • Be Patient: Don’t expect immediate results. Like any practice, benefits come with consistency and time.

Common Beginner Challenges and Solutions:

  • Feeling Self-Conscious: Practice alone initially until you build confidence in your chanting.
  • Mind Wandering: This is normal. Gently bring your focus back to the vibration of the chant when you notice your mind drifting.
  • Throat Discomfort: If you experience any strain, lower your volume and ensure you’re staying hydrated.
  • Timing Issues: Don’t worry about perfect timing initially. Focus on the quality of each individual Om.

Remember, every expert was once a beginner. The key is to maintain regular practice with patience and self-compassion.

It is best to sit in an upright manner in a lotus pose. Let the left heel touch your groin area (the area of your root chakra.) This position aligns your body in the correct geometrical pattern to harness as much energy as you can while meditating.  Now close your eyes.
