The heart chakra signifies love and unity. Lying in the middle of the seven chakras, it is truly the center of our being. Love is a very strong emotion and experienced by many and that is why it is easily blocked too. 

Located above the heart, in the center of the chest, the heart chakra helps in developing compassion and kindness. You become a more loving person and a sense of calmness fills you. It is this chakra that helps you in dealing with grief and overcoming toxic relationships.

Healing this chakra will strengthen the stillness within yourself and you will learn to love yourself again. So let’s discover how to heal the heart chakra.

What is Anahata?

The Sanskrit name for the heart chakra – Anahata means unbeaten or unhurt. All of the suffering you have experienced as a result of not receiving enough love as a child – can lead to blockage of this chakra. 

Anahata means living your life with compassion and kindness and inspiring in others the same. People feel safe and they can be themselves around you. A sense of love and caring develops among individuals with this chakra opened.

The element of this chakra is ‘air,’ which signifies an openness to all experiences. Just like air flows in everything, just like it covers all spaces, Anahata will lead you to a feeling of unity with all living things and this universe. By experiencing this, you will develop love, kindness, compassion, unity, and thankfulness.

These are a few characteristics which the Heart Chakra influences or is influenced by:
  • Self-knowledge
  • The intensity with which you care for another person
  • Your capacity for empathy
  • Self-reflective capacities
  • Your emotional openness
  • How peaceful you feel

The Symptoms of an Imbalanced heart Chakra

The heart chakra is greatly influenced by your emotional experiences throughout life. It is generally blocked if as a child you have faced physical and emotional abuse. Also following unhealthy societal beliefs about love drives the heart chakra to get blocked.

The psychology behind it is that when you do not receive enough love as a child, you do not think it is necessary to give love. Love becomes a negotiation. You postpone this love giving and stop loving altogether because you have not experienced it yourself. 

There are also other physical and emotional symptoms for an imbalanced Heart Chakra.

The Physical Symptoms to pay attention to:
  • Heart and lung problems develop such as asthma and high blood pressure.
  • Feelings of persistent heaviness in your heart.
  • Insomnia
  • A decrease in immune system function
The Emotional Symptoms to pay attention to:
  • Restlessness
  • Impatience and irritability
  • Lack of empathy
  • Difficulty trusting others
  • Feel jealous of other people
  • Carry a deep sense of fear
  • You suffer from social anxiety

There are two forms of imbalanced chakra, where too much energy flows in or too little. You have to find the ‘sweet spot’ for activating your chakras.

The Need for a Balanced Heart Chakra

Our heart universally signifies love in relationships. Relationships with parents, siblings, friends, or your spouse. You choose knowingly or unknowingly into receiving or ignoring love. This depends on your positive or negative experiences with love. This energy that you choose to experience stays in your heart chakra.

As a result, due to the accumulation of too much energy or too little energy in the heart chakra, the chakra gets imbalanced.

A balanced heart chakra will lead you to strengthen your relationships with others, to a disciplined lifestyle. It can grant you a sense of freedom that you had never experienced before.

If you have dealt with a toxic relationship, it has most certainly blocked your Anahata. If you pay attention to the symptoms then you will notice that disappointment is the biggest reason for inner turmoil. All of this in turn leading to an imbalanced heart chakra.

So in order to feel love and happiness in life again, you need to balance your heart chakra.

8 Ways to Heal the Heart Chakra

Before jumping to healing your chakras you first have to realize your pain and try to deal with them first. Try forgiving others and accepting other’s way of doing things that releases the accumulated tension in our chakra.

There are some methods you could adopt to heal the chakra like the ones mentioned below. Do give a try to all, to settle on the ones which work best for you.

1. Meditation Techniques

Meditation is bringing the mind to stillness and calmness and is very unique to all individuals. It is better if you sit in a comfortable position, wear comfortable clothes and most importantly find a place where you will not get disturbed.  

Now visualize a green ball in the center of the chest. Also, feel that this green glow is growing and spreading through your whole body. It’s good that you practice for 3-5 minutes and get into a flow. With practice, you will get better at it.

Loving-kindness meditation works great for the heart chakra. Sit down in a quiet place and direct love towards yourself, while initially focusing on your breath. And then direct love towards four people – a friend, a family member, a neutral person to you and a hostile person.

Also, do these:

  • Practice hugging (this releases oxytocin which calms you)
  • Learn to breathe deeply
  • Laugh 
  • Do one kind thing each day
2. Mantras and Chants

The seed mantra for the heart chakra is YAM which is a single syllable word pronounced as “yyyyyyaaaaaammmmmm.” This sound matches the vibrations of the heart chakra and helps in activating the chakra. Also, chant along with the vibrations, this greatly helps. Feel the sound coming from your throat and not your mouth.

For practicing the chanting of the seed mantra, pronounce the mantra along with the chant in the video below. Synchronize your breath with the chanting and focus on the vibrations created by the mantra chanting.

3. Sleep Meditation Music 

In addition to meditating via Heart Chakra chanting, you can also heal the chakra by listening to sleep meditation music that we have prepared.

To effectively use the music, we recommend to play the music on speakers at a low volume (almost to a whisper) while sleeping. We also recommend not consuming any heavy meal before sleeping as it will disturb the sleep pattern. 

Focus on your breath and visualize an orange sphere three inches below the navel while sleeping. As you inhale the sphere expands and as you exhale it spreads this energy throughout your body and you slowly drift into sleep. The screen will automatically turn black in a few minutes.

4. Affirmations

The Affirmations work to realign the Heart Chakra. Repeating them multiple times a day or whenever you sense that the chakras are not balanced, can be very useful. These are some:

  1. My Heart is filled with love. It’s filled with compassion
  2. I give and receive love, unconditionally
  3. Its love that opens me and heals me
  4. I am love
  5. I see myself as a flower, full of purity and innocence
  6. I am Eternally Loved.

5. Asanas and Other Physical Techniques

Yoga is very important to balance the heart chakra. Wear something comfortable and get started with yoga for better relationships and an increased sense of love.

The above video specifically guides you through each yoga pose. Practice the yoga along with the video and follow through carefully to get the poses right. Add these 10 minutes of yoga every day in the morning.

6. Gems, Jewelry and Color

Stones such as Jade, Rose Quartz, Green Calcite, Green Aventurine can help with dealing with emotional injury and compassion fatigue.

Use these to regain balance to your emotions. You can keep them near the chakra or even better wear them in the form of jewelry.

Color

The color for the heart chakra is green. This color signifies health, abundance, and prosperity. Wearing green-colored clothes can enhance the opening of the heart chakra, as the frequency after the brain processes this color matches that of the heart chakra. 

7. Food and Diet

Some specific foods related to the Heart Chakra are:

  • Eating green foods like limes, green apples, spinach, green bell peppers, and pineapple.
  • Also consuming foods rich in vitamin C
  • Other green fruits like lettuce, broccoli, avocados, peas, zucchini, and grapes.
8. Anahata Mudra

Mudras are a way to attune ourselves with specific vibrations in the universe. In order to balance your heart chakra, mudras are very beneficial. You can practice the mudra for 2 -3 minutes daily in the mornings and evenings.

Also known as the Lotus mudra, it brings forth new possibilities and love into your life. Similar to a lotus flower, place the palms of the hands together in front of the heart. Keep the base of the palms together, with the thumbs and the little fingers joined, while spreading the other fingers wide, like an unfolding flower.
